Breastfeeding: How to Know You’re Doing Well

In the early days, breastfeeding can feel both wonderful and challenging. Many mums worry about whether their baby’s behavior at the breast is “right,” but often, everything is exactly as it should be. While there’s lots of information on breastfeeding problems and fixes, it’s equally important to know what normal, healthy breastfeeding looks like. This guide should help reassure you that you and your baby are on track!

A Healthy, Normal Breastfed Baby:

Feeds Frequently
Newborns are used to receiving constant nutrition in the womb, so now they need time to adjust to “meals.” Expect them to feed 8-16 times in 24 hours in the early days. Frequent feeding is totally normal and gives your baby what they need to grow and feel secure.

Stays Engaged During Feeds
Babies should take deep, sustained sucks at the breast. The slower and deeper the suck, the more milk they get. Here’s what good drinking looks like. If your baby only takes a few sucks before dozing off, it might be helpful to check in with a lactation consultant.

Looks Satisfied After a Feed
A well-fed baby will often unlatch naturally and look relaxed or “milk drunk.” Since breastmilk is easily digested, it’s normal if they’re hungry again in an hour or two!

Poos Regularly
Once your milk is in, your baby should have regular bowel movements until around 8 weeks old. Expect at least 3-4 poos daily about the size of a £2 coin. Some babies will go more often in smaller amounts, while others have fewer but larger bowel movements—both patterns are normal and indicate they’re getting enough milk.

Is Adjusting to Life on the Outside
Newborns are adapting to life outside the womb, which can take 6-12 weeks, often called the “fourth trimester.” During this period, babies need comfort, frequent feeding, and closeness. This phase is entirely normal, and while it can sometimes lead to worries that “something’s wrong” with breastfeeding, these behaviors are part of this big adjustment. If the signs here are true for you, rest assured that breastfeeding is likely going well.

A Healthy, Normal Breastfeeding Mum:

Feels Comfortable During Feeds
While some sensitivity in the first week is normal, breastfeeding should be comfortable overall. You might feel a “tugging” sensation, but it shouldn’t be painful.

Has Nipples That Aren’t Misshapen After Feeding
Your nipple should come out of your baby’s mouth looking roughly the same as it went in. If it appears squashed, flattened, or shaped like a new lipstick, a lactation consultant can help address any issues causing this.

Is Free from Back Pain or Discomfort
A good breastfeeding position should allow you to relax fully, without muscle tension or back pain. Experiment until you find one that lets you sit or lie comfortably.

Feels Positively About Breastfeeding
Yes, breastfeeding can be intense and demanding, but overall, you should feel that it’s something fulfilling for both you and your baby. If this isn’t how you feel, a lactation consultant can help you find a way to make breastfeeding work for both of you. Remember, a healthy breastfeeding relationship should feel like something you’re getting as much from as you’re giving.

Breastfeeding may take time to adjust to, but if you see these signs in yourself and your baby, you’re likely doing great! And if anything doesn’t feel right, remember, a lactation consultant can make a big difference with just a small tweak. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need support—learning to breastfeed is a journey, and you don’t have to take it alone.
